Department History
The department was established in 2010 with the establishment of the teaching hospital. From only one consultant and few medical officers to over 8 consultants and various subspecialty and numerous resident doctors and their different level of training as well as many house officers. The department have full accreditation for training resident doctors at membership level in both colleges, WACS and NPMCN. The department also have full accreditation to train specialist surgeons at part 2 level with the WACS in paediatric surgery, urology and general surgery. We have 3 consultants in urology unit, 2 consultants in paediatric surgery unit, 2 consultants in general surgery unit and one each consultants in neurosurgery and plastic surgery units. The department do complex surgical procedures in all the surgical sub speciality accept cardiothoracic surgery but we have a resident that is on training to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. Surgeries like LASER lithotripsy, TURP, radical cystectomy, spine surgeries repair of TOF ETC. We operate in the modular theatre with 2 suits and main theatre with 3 suits. Occasionally we use trauma centre theatre. Below are the list of consultants in the department as at 2026: Dr Kefas John Bwala the HOD and consultant paediatric surgeon, Dr Haruna Usman Liman a consultant urologist, Dr Baje Salihu Makama a consultant urologist, Dr Olabisi O Ogunleye a consultant neurosurgeon, Dr Bala Ningi a consultant general surgeon, Dr Yau Suleiman a consultant general surgeon, Dr Eziekiel Sabo Anthony a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr Umar M Aminu a consultant paediatric surgeon, Dr Yakubu Huseini a consultant urologist. The department is open to collaboration. We engaged in surgical services both elective and emergency, teaching of nursing, medical students and resident doctors and carry out research. We have managed some grants.
